Acts of Kindness: Sue Theroux

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Sue Theroux loves teaching yoga. She does not, however, use yoga mats, but yoga chairs for her class at Vintage Park Memory Care Community. Because of her care and touch, the exercises have an uplifting and lasting effect.

"I see my yoga coming out in their smiles. When they are dancing and moving, I know that I am reaching them, and that's important to me," she said.

Theroux started her yoga chair therapy shortly after moving to Las Vegas from New Jersey two years ago. Her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, and life as Theroux's family knew it completely changed.

"Family traditions and things like that that have to change due to your loved one changing. Those were the hardest things to adjust to," she said.

At first, Theroux says she felt alone. She eventually found support through the Desert Southwest Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. Soon after, she started her own support group, sharing a very important message.

"This affects not only you and your family directly, it spreads out. It permeates throughout your whole extended family. I know what you're going through. I'm in a similar situation, and you're not alone," she said.

"(She is) somebody who is compassionate, caring and there," said Alzheimer's Association Desert Southwest/Southern Nevada Chapter Regional Director Albert Chavez. "She is willing to do whatever she can to help us."

Theroux also mans the help line and takes her yoga class to other memory care facilities throughout the valley.

"It really is an honor to be able to work with the people here at Vintage Park. It warms my heart," Theroux said.

8 News NOW is rewarding Sue Theroux's efforts, awarding her $800 as part of its weekly series Acts of Kindness.
