LAS VEGAS - When you sell a home, one of the things you have to do is close out all your utilities.
Geraldine Hanson did that this summer, when she sold her house and moved into a retirement community. She never received a final power bill, however, and NV Energy kept charging her for electricity the new homeowners were using.
"They threatened to take out, to draw money out of my checking account for these charges," Hanson said.
The bill was nearly 300 dollars. Hanson says she was very concerned, because she's on a fixed income and can't afford to pay for electricity in a home she doesn't own.
She says she tried calling NV Energy several times to resolve the matter. The utility showed she canceled her service July 16th, but the system wouldn't recognize the change or stop charging her for electricity usage in her old home.
"They could never correct it. They could not send me a final bill until I contacted (8 on Your Side)," she said. "Within a day or two, I got the final bill."
Hanson received credit on her account for the mistaken charges. She received a final bill and promptly paid it, solving her problem.
