Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police are investigating an officer involved shooting at North Nellis Boulevard and Stewart Avenue.

The shooting occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. Monday. Police say an officer on patrol spotted a man he thought was a murder suspect. The officer followed the man into a nearby convenience store.

According to police, the officer ordered the man to show his hands.

"The individual complied by showing his left hand, but he hid his right side of his body away from the officer. The officer, at some point, felt threatened, and he fired one round on the individual as the individual was backing away from the officer," said Metro Police Deputy Chief Al Salinas.

The officer shot the man in the abdomen. The man was unarmed. He was taken to University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the man was not the murder suspect the officer thought he was. The officer is on paid leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
