North Las Vegas, Las Vegas Look at Combining Services

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- The cities of North Las Vegas and Las Vegas agreed Thursday to work together on saving money.

City officials announced a six-month consolidation agreement allowing them to look at ways to streamline services and save money.

North Las Vegas has been drowning in debt and looking for ways to cut costs since the recession hit. Las Vegas has also struggled with budget problems.

Under the agreement, the cities will set up a committee to look for areas they can bring under one umbrella, including city libraries, parks and animal control services.

The Las Vegas City Manager Betsy Fretwell and North Las Vegas Interim City Manager Jeff Buchanan will be working on the effort to combine services.

North Las Vegas already sends its jail inmates to the Las Vegas Detention Center, under an agreement made in 2011.

Both city councils have to approve the deal at their Nov. 6 meetings.
