Man Arrested in Series of Dumpster Fires

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Clark County Fire investigators have arrested a Las Vegas man in connection with a series of fires that were set October 2.

According to fire investigators, 28-year-old Paul Joyner set several dumpster fires and one car fire near Maryland Parkway and Flamingo Road over several hours.

The first fire was reported just before 5:30 a.m. at an apartment complex on Rochelle Avenue near Maryland Parkway. Several more fires were reported in the same area over the next two hours.

After a lull of several hours, more fires were reported starting at 4:30 p.m. The car fire was reported just a few minutes later at a business park along Maryland Parkway north of the Flamingo Road intersection.

Fire investigators say Joyner set a 2012 Audi convertible on fire. Damage to the car is estimated at about $20,000.

Assistant Clark County Fire Chief Sandra Baker said the fires appeared suspicious and determined they were intentional. The next round of calls came in by late afternoon Wednesday with a series of dumpsters ablaze behind a dollar store.

"The investigators were going to one or two, and they were thinking this is in the same vicinity. We've got a problem, and we may have a serial arsonist," Baker said. "The fires were getting close and encroaching to buildings."

Investigators arrested the suspect at approximately 5:30 p.m. near a strip mall on Maryland Parkway while responding to another dumpster fire.

Joyner was identified as a suspect because of an arrest in April for similar fires and was arrested behind a Best Buy off Maryland Parkway. He admitted to setting the fires.

Joyner faces 10 counts of third-degree arson and one count of attempted arson. He was released in September after serving a six-month sentence for the fires he set in the spring.
