HENDERSON, Nev. -- The teen accused of stabbing his mother and younger brother to death appeared in court for the first time Monday morning. He went before a justice of the peace in Henderson Justice Court.

Adrian Navarro-Canales, 16, is charged as an adult with two counts of murder in the deaths of 40-year-old Elvira Canales-Gomez and 9-year-old Cesar Navarro.

Navarro-Canales appeared in court but did not enter a plea. He did signal to the court that he understood the charges against him. A public defender was appointed to handle his case.

Clark County District Attorney Steven Wolfson said Navarro-Canales could spend the rest of his life in prison.

"This was a brutal, senseless killing and we're proceeding and we're going to prosecute this like any other case," Wolfson said.

Navarro-Canales cannot face the death penalty because he is under 18 years old.

In the affidavit for an arrest warrant, the Clark County Coroner's Office estimated the victims were killed on Sept. 17, Tuesday evening in their apartment on Eastern Avenue near Sunridge Heights Parkway. Their bodies were not found until the following Friday.

The motive for the murders is still not known; however, Navarro-Canales' aunt told police that he had been violent with his mother in the past.

"It is a legitimate concern. Everybody wants to know what caused him to react like this, and I think hopefully these facts will come out in the future," Wolfson said.

Navarro-Canales will have a preliminary hearing on Oct. 30, 2013.
