LAS VEGAS -- The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department received a call around 8 a.m. Saturday from a male reporting he attempted suicide.

Upon arrival, officers went into the house on Sleepy Spruce Street and found a deceased female in the backyard. She was later identified as Karen Vernel Hevener, 56, from Las Vegas.

Homicide investigators were immediately called to the home. Investigators say a physical altercation between Karen Hevener and her boyfriend 51-year-old Neal Huff turned deadly.

In the arrest report released Monday, Huff told police that they had started fighting Friday night. Eventually, they ended up fighting in the backyard. He told police that he pushed Hevener into the pool and then shed pulled him in. He said he wrapped his legs around hers and held her head underwater by her hair.

He told officers that after she stopped moving, he pulled her out and tried to revive her without success. He told police that he felt ashamed at what he had done, so he tried to commit suicide several times but could not.

He finally called police for help. Police found him with a rope around his neck and his hands handcuffed behind his back.

Huff was transported to Spring Valley Hospital and later released and booked into the Clark County Detention Center for murder.

This incident remains under investigation.
