Coroner ID's Woman Killed in Morning Fire

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - The Clark County Coroner's Office has identified the woman who died in a house fire Friday morning as 28-year-old Carmen Salomon.

Her cause of death is still pending, but earlier firefighters said she died of apparent smoke inhalation.

The fire occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Brenner Way near Lamb Boulevard and Bonanza Road. Las Vegas Fire and Rescue says the fire started in the garage.

When crews arrived, they discovered the smoldering remnants of the fire in the garage, which had been converted into an apartment. After searching through the apartment, fire investigators discovered Salomon lying on the floor. She was transported to University Medical Center where she later died.

Firefighters say the apartment had a metal bar security door that was locked, making it difficult for fire crews to gain access.

"Bars on windows and doors always make it difficult for firefighters. We don't have a magic tool that opens them up quick. It cuts down on the time it takes for us to enter," said Tim Szymanski with Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.

Szymanski says it appears the renovations to the garage apartment were not up to code because it did not have smoke detectors and entry ways from the home were walled off.

Salomon's three children and her mother escaped the fire.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation but fire investigators have ruled it accidental. Firefighters found smoking materials and and candles in the makeshift apartment.
