16-year-old Accused of Murdering Family Arrested

LAS VEGAS -- Henderson Police have arrested the 16-year-old accused in the killings of his mother and 9-year-old brother.

According to police, Adrian Navarro-Canales was taken into custody Wednesday morning. He was found sitting in an open-air food court on the Strip near Tropicana Avenue.

Police found Navarro-Canales following a tip Tuesday night that he was in the area. Detectives found him sitting by himself.

"We don't know how long he'd been walking the Strip or been in the area. There is a good chance that he had been in there since last Wednesday. What we do know is we received a tip on Tuesday that he had been seen in that area that day," Keith Paul, spokesperson with the Henderson Police Department, said.

Navarro-Canales is accused of stabbing his mother Elvira Canales-Gomez, 40, and his brother Cesar Navarro, 9, to death last week. Their bodies were found in their apartment on Eastern and Sunridge Heights Parkway Friday.

The suspect's aunt told police that he had a history of being violent and defiant with his mother.

Navarro-Canales was booked into the juvenile holding area at the Clark County Detention Center; however, he is being charged as an adult with two counts of murder.
