Holiday Hiring Underway at Stores

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- The calendar may still say September, but experts say it's never too early to start looking for work if you are in the market for seasonal jobs. It turns out many stores are already hiring part-time holiday employees.

Black Friday is a little more than two months away and retailers are getting ready. The Container Store at Town Square started hiring early this year to prepare for the onslaught of shoppers.

In the retail world, the holiday shopping season is, in some ways, already here. Container Store manager Norine Rudolph is already thinking ahead in terms of stocking up on the right inventory and finding the right employees.

"It's all about preparation that's for sure. We have to prepare for the holidays and many retailers do that in October," she said.

According to a new employment report, stores nationwide plan to hire about 700,000 temporary employees between October and December of 2013, which is down from more than 751,000 workers hired last year.

"Retail is the big one that everyone goes for," said Daniel Carreon, a college freshman who is looking for a part-time job. He says to be successful job seekers must be committed.

"Just start applying to different places, as many as you can," Carreon said.

Some of the big box stores are all hiring right now including Walmart, Target, Toys "R" Us and Kohl's.

Some of those retailers though are not offering as many jobs as they did last year so the best advice is to get an application in early.

"Our target is to hire seasonal positions as early as possible in the next few months and then have a wonderful holiday season," Rudolph said.
