Mom Arrested in Cancer Scam Facing 95 Misdemeanor Charges

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- The Mesquite mom accused of scamming money from people by telling them her son had cancer was charged with 95 misdemeanors Monday.

According to the Mesquite Police, a no-bail arrest warrant was issued for Shawanna Starr Flores Guerro on charges which included 32 counts of obtaining money by false pretenses, 29 counts of petit larceny, one count of contributory neglect of a child, one count of obstructing a public officer and 32 counts of unlawful acts involving email or transmission of data information.

Guerro surrendered to authorities Monday evening.

Police say Guerro benefited from several fundraisers and a fundraising website after claiming her 7-year-old son had malignant liver cancer.

The investigation began after she could not provide necessary medical documents to a charity that was trying to include her son in a fundraiser.

No additional arrests have been made, but police say the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Mesquite detective Ron Richmond at (702) 346-5262, ext. 6032.
