North Las Vegas Finance Director Fired

Posted: Updated:

NORTH LAS VEGAS -- North Las Vegas finance director Gerald "Al" Zochowski was fired by the city Wednesday, city hall sources tell the I-Team.

Sources add that Zochowski was under internal investigation for the past few weeks after major accounting errors were discovered. Zochowski was placed on paid administrative leave, which ended Wednesday. Zochowski is not under any criminal investigation.

The city released the following official statement:

"Gerald Zochowski is no longer employed with the City of North Las Vegas. We appreciate his service to the citizens of North Las Vegas and wish him the best in his future endeavors."

Zochowski was chief of North Las Vegas' budget for the past two years. An internal email --obtained by the I-Team -- from former city manager Tom Hacker questions an accounting error by Zochowski. Hacker informs Zochowski that the $2 million budgeting mistake will need to be made up.

North Las Vegas is currently seeking a new city finance director to balance the troubled budget. The I-Team has learned they are getting interest from various members of the local business community. The new finance director will have to continue scrutinizing Zochowski's budget and figure out what impact the reported mistakes will have on North Las Vegas taxpayers.
