Metro Police and the city of Las Vegas were more generous than other local taxpayer-supported agencies when it came to providing employee benefits in 2012.

An 8 News NOW analysis of data provided by the agencies shows that Metro Police full- and part-time employees averaged $30,771 in benefits, with Las Vegas next at $26,815.

When considering only those who were paid at least $20,000, which eliminates most part-time employees, Las Vegas came out on top at $38,210 per worker, followed by Metro Police at $35,120.

Benefits typically include health insurance and retirement.

When combined with salary and other payments, Metro employees on average received $102,137 in total compensation, tops among local agencies that provided complete data. But when considering only workers paid at least $20,000, Las Vegas topped the list by averaging $126,375 per employee in total compensation, ahead of Henderson ($120,168) and Metro Police ($115,880).

Of the seven agencies that provided complete benefits data for 2011 and 2012, six increased their spending on employee benefits in 2012. The biggest of the agencies, the Clark County School District, was by far the biggest spender in 2012 at $588.1 million. But its average per employee remained considerably below that of Metro Police and Las Vegas.

The only entity that decreased its benefits spending was North Las Vegas, which went from $57 million in 2011 to $40.4 million in 2012.
