Store Helps Woman Cover Car Damage from Shopping Cart

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Beverly Gavin and her grandson do not usually venture far from home. "I always stay in my little four-mile radius, being an old lady," she said.

Their trips are few and far between. Typically, Gavin and her grandson go to the nearby Albertson's supermarket, where she is a regular customer.

"I know almost everybody by name, and they know me by first name," she said.

One day, she left the store and found her car damaged by a shopping cart. She wanted help. "I saw the cart boy out there, and I asked him to go get the manager," she said.

The manager snapped pictures of the damage. Gavin filled out a report, and she says the manager told her the store would take care of it. She says she believed him, until she talked to the store's insurance provider.

"He said, ‘I doubt if we are going to do anything about it,'" Gavin said.

Discouraged, she called 8 on Your Side.

8 on Your Side called the Albertson's corporate office. A representative said they would revisit Gavin's situation. After reviewing the case, Albertson's representatives again said the store is not liable.

8 on Your Side asked if the store could do anything at all for such a loyal customer. Albertson's came through in a big and unexpected way.

"They called my husband and told him that they would send us our deductible," Gavin said.

In less than a week, Gavin received a check for $500 to fix her car. Now, the $1,000 dollars worth of damage can be fixed, and Gavin and her grandson can keep shopping at their favorite store.
