Airport Welcomes Mexican Independence Day Visitors

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- McCarran International Airport is more than doubling its number of flights from Mexico for Mexican Independence Day weekend.

The airport says 37 commercial flights will be coming directly to Las Vegas from Mexico on Thursday and Friday, more than double the norm.

The holiday is a major tourist draw for Las Vegas. This year's festivities include a boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Mexico's Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, parades, a mariachi festival and concerts by Latin music superstars including Enrique Iglesias, Marc Anthony and Luis Miguel.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is marketing in Mexico right now. It is running TV ads promoting "el grito" or "the cry," which is a reference to the event that started the Mexican War of Independence.

"The more people that we can get here the more jobs we can get back in the community," Courtney Fitzgerald with the LVCVA said.

The airport says it's seeing greater interest in Las Vegas among Mexican tourists. Passenger traffic from America's southern neighbor is up 42 percent from three years ago.

Airport officials are bringing in a mariachi band Thursday to welcome visitors.
