Driving You Crazy: Right-of-Way at Alta and Shadow

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - A viewer says the intersection at Alta Drive and Shadow Lane needs a yield sign. He says he has seen numerous fender benders due to right-of-way issues.

The viewer says drivers traveling southbound along Shadow will typically see a red light at the same time northbound traffic sees a green light. Next, the green light will appear in both directions. He says this creates right-of-way confusion for southbound traffic turning left toward eastbound Alta.

The city acknowledged the southbound to eastbound left-turn movement at Alta and Shadow is a steady green ball. This is comparable to many other locations within the city. There is no policy stating a "Left Turn Yield on Green" sign must be in place, because this is considered a standard driving practice as described in the Nevada Revised Statutes.

When drivers encounter a steady green ball, those turning left must yield to vehicles coming through the intersection. This is required by anyone who drives in Nevada, including drivers at Alta and Shadow.
