Hundreds of Zappos Employees Prepare to Move Downtown

LAS VEGAS -- Zappos, the online retailer based in southern Nevada, will be opening the doors to it's new headquarters Monday.

For two years, it's been a watching and waiting game for Zappos headquarters to begin operations from the old Las Vegas City Hall building in downtown Las Vegas. On Friday, the company's sign was put on the building. The $60 million project will initially move more than 200 Zappos employees into the new headquarters, others will follow in the coming weeks.

"On the weekends and some weekdays we'll be moving the rest of the company. The merchandising teams, the customer loyalty teams will come over and in 40 days we will have moved in all 1,400 employees," said Brad Tomm, Zappos campus operations and sustainability.

Managers of nearby stores and restaurants say they've already seen an increase in business since the start of the downtown revitalization project, but the arrival of Zappos is the big push they've been waiting for.

"I'm so happy. They've been talking about it too. They're opening Monday," said Paula Dolan, the assistant manager at nearby 7-Eleven.

"We're all excited anticipating what's going to happen. It's kind of like we've been waiting a long time for downtown to become what it should be, you know a place to be," said Bruce Heaton, the general manager of Hogs and Heifers Saloon.

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman says an infusion of 1,400 more people working downtown will be a welcome boost in the city's sales and property tax revenue.

"What we're hopeful for is more action, and more businesses opening, and more purchases being made," Goodman said.

Thom said, employees are also excited about the move.

"They've been coming to visit the building over the last month to see their spot, see their desk, and we're really happy about that," Thom said.

The headquarters will have a large plaza designed so all employees will get a chance to interact with each other. Zappos officials say it will also be open to the public.
