LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A judge set bail at $1 million for an ex-convict from California facing felony allegations that he abducted and sexually assaulted a schoolgirl at knifepoint.

Richard Martin Schlacta spoke Friday only to acknowledge that he understood the charges against him.

He's accused of sexual assault of a child under 14, kidnapping of a minor, coercion and battery with a deadly weapon in the Wednesday morning attack. Authorities said Schlacta had no known prior connection with the school or the girl.

Judge Joseph Sciscento noted the 48-year-old Schlacta had nine prior felony convictions.

He assigned his case to the Clark County public defender's office and scheduled a Sept. 26 preliminary hearing.

Police say Schlacta tried to run but was arrested after the 13-year-old girl escaped and flagged down a motorist near a southeast Las Vegas school. The girl was treated for her injuries at University Medical Center in Las Vegas.

Police say the girl identified Schlacta as her attacker.
