Teacher Charged with Open and Gross Lewdness

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- A Las Vegas teacher is under arrest on two counts of open and gross lewdness, Metro Police announced Wednesday.

According to police, they arrested 47-year-old Alfphonso Washington of Henderson on Tuesday on allegations that he inappropriately touched female students.

He was a teacher and girls' basketball coach at Lied Middle School. The Clark County School District says he is currently not assigned to a school.

Metro's Sexual Assault detectives received information about allegations of open and gross lewdness by a teacher at Lied Middle School in May.

Police say their investigation brought them to name Washington as a suspect. Washington has been a teacher in the district since January 2003.

Washington's attorney, Michael Gowdey, says the case is blown out of proportion and there was no sexual contact between his client and the alleged victims.

He also told 8 News NOW that is one 14-year-old student who is making the allegations and his client looks forward to his day in court.

A preliminary hearing for Washington is set for Sept. 10.

Anyone with information is urged to call Metro's Sexual Assault Detail at (702) 828-3421, or to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at (702) 385-5555.
