Sheriff Gillespie Won't Seek Another Term

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie announced Monday he is not seeking another term in office.

Gillespie said he plans to complete his current term. He has worked for Metro for 32 years. He has been sheriff for seven years.

In a statement released Monday afternoon, Gillespie said he wanted the department focused on serving the community not on speculating on the politics of his job.

"Without the obligation that comes from campaigning and fundraising I can focus on completing some of my major objectives like the More Cops initiative and putting more officers out on the streets. There is nothing more important to me and nothing I am more committed to seeing through," Gillespie said.

Gillespie highlighted efforts like the Safe Village Initiative, The Terrorism Liaison Officer and Community Oriented Policing in his announcement.

Gillespie has come under fire in the past for officer-involved shootings. In particular, he has been criticized in the past few weeks for his decision not to fire an officer who had shot and injured an unarmed man, despite a recommendation by the citizen's use of force board that the officer be let go.
