Supreme Court: Judge's Disciplinary Hearing Can Proceed

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- The Nevada Supreme Court has ruled that a disciplinary hearing against a Clark County District Court judge can go forward.

The disciplinary hearing is in reference to charges that he ruled in cases involving his girlfriend, who was an attorney in the District Attorney's office.

The court ruled Thursday that the hearing for Judge Steven Jones can proceed. Jones had tried to delay the hearing, arguing that the state Judiciary Discipline Commission did not follow its own procedures and rules in his case.

Two judges of the three-judge panel ruled delaying the hearing would undermine the public's confidence in the discipline process. They also said Jones could appeal if the commission sanctioned him. Judge Michael Cherry dissented.

Jones is currently suspended, after being charged with conspiracy, fraud and money laundering in connection with a multi-million dollar fraud scheme. He has pled not guilty to those charges.
