Lip Biter Sentenced to 15 More Years in Prison

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Roberto Flores received a 15-year sentence Wednesday for abusing and raping his pregnant girlfriend last year, but the victim's family hoped for a stiffer penalty.

The victim, Victoria Silva, wasn't in court Wednesday. Her mother said Silva couldn't bear to see her abuser's face again.

New information revealed Wednesday might have led to the lesser sentence. Flores and his attorney begged the judge for leniency, in part, because of sexual abuse they say he suffered as a child.

Flores was convicted of strangling and raping Silva, his then-pregnant girlfriend. He also bit off a chunk of her lip, and took her to the hospital after coercing her not to report him to police.

Flores will be eligible for parole after six years of this sentence. He already is serving time for child abuse after being convicted of severely beating an 11-month-old child.

In 2008, he was sentenced to seven years, for biting off 80 percent of his ex-wife's lip. He only served seven months.

Laura Herrera, Silva's mother, was let down.

"I feel uncomfortable because he didn't get what I was expecting," Herrera said. "They painted him as if he was the victim, but my daughter is the victim. The life for us is not the same, and no matter how many years go by, my daughter will never be the same."
