Back-to-School Supplies Needed for Clark County Foster Kids

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Between costly clothes and the long school supply lists, the start of the school year can be financially tough, especially for foster families.

Peggy's Attic is a haven for foster children. About a dozen show up each morning to go shopping for clothes and other items. Peggy's Attic is a donation center for Clark County Department of Family Services and serves children in the foster care system.

"Go in here and you can pick out a toy," Audrey Rosentein, the manager of Peggy's Attic, tells a child.

"Every year, it's more expensive," said Juan Estrada.

He expects to spend $50 or more on school supplies. Estrada has three foster boys, who also happen to be his nephews.

"Glad they have this place where they provide us with all this stuff," Estrada said.

Many foster children are removed suddenly from their homes, taking little with them.

"When children are removed, they barely have the clothes on their back," Rosentein said.

She said kids can be physically or emotionally bruised and battered and that is why she asking for help.

"We're only as good as the donations that come into us," she said.

Rosentein is requesting school supplies which include everything from new uniforms to pencils, crayons and backpacks.

She wants foster children to feel good and ready for school just like their classmates.

"You see a light come back in their eyes," she said.

So far, she's collected 60 backpacks with school items, but she's hopes to get 750 more.

Estrada's boys made out with brand new bikes on this day, but they'll be back for school supplies in coming days.

If you would like to make a donation of school supplies, you can visit Peggy's Attic at 710 N. Pecos., located behind Family Court off of Bonanza Road, just west of Pecos. Donations are accepted Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 to 11 a.m. For more information, call 455-5424. Click here for a donation wish list.
