Back to School Shopping Challenge: Abigail Peterson

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - This week, 8 News NOW is teaming with local bloggers to find the best deals for back to school shopping. One woman, who is both a parent and a teacher, embarks on her quest for school supplies.

Abigail Peterson's mission at the Staples store in Town Square is two-fold. She is buying back-to-school supplies for her three kids and, as a teacher, seeking supplies for her class.

"It is a very stressful time," she said. "My strategy is to go through, use coupons and (my) teacher discount, get as much bang for my buck."

Her teacher discount gets her an additional 15 percent off. She's a smart shopper, calculating immediately the biggest hit to her $88 budget.

"The most expensive thing is going to be backpacks and lunch boxes," she said.

Because she printed Staples coupons ahead of time, she also gets five dollars off. With her teacher status, she gets another bonus. Teachers can get 25 times as many school supplies at Staples as regular shoppers.

"Where an average customer can get maybe two maximum boxes of pencils, they allow teachers to get up to 25," Peterson said.

When it's time to check out, Peterson offers a few more shopping tips.

"Use a rewards card, so you get money back. Fill out rebates. It may take a little while, but it's worth it," she said.

It certainly proved to be for her.

"Forty-eight items for $87.03," she said. "What really helped: printed out coupons. I got a $5 off coupon for every purchase of $30."

This week, 8 News NOW asked four bloggers, including Peterson, to buy as many school supplies as possible for $88 each. Friday on 8 News NOW This Morning, see what advice they give other parents and teachers for back to school shopping.
