Back to School Shopping Challenge: Billie Hillier

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Parents are heading to valley stores for their back to school shopping. This week, 8 News NOW teams with local bloggers to find the best deals.

Meet Billie Hillier. She's a mother to a 17-year-old daughter and 18-year-old son.

"I have shopped back to school for 16 years," she said.

At the Walmart near Nellis Boulevard and Charleston Boulevard, she has a definite strategy in mind.

"I am going to try to price match as much as I can," she said. "I don't like to chase deals, so one thing I like to do is compare ads of all the different stores in the valley, and see who has the best deals and bring them to a store that will price match."

She knows how to stretch her money. "Two years ago, I got three thousand dollars worth of school supplies for seventy five dollars," she said.

She says she buys generic brands as much as possible.

"Here, we get twelve-count for fifty cents versus a twelve-count for ninety seven - same (number) of pencils, double the price," she said.

Hillier also tries to buy enough items for an entire class. "I am going to be buying ten boxes of pencils for the classroom," she said.

In addition to price matching, her other favorite trick of the trade involves mobile phone apps.

"Download their mobile apps for their store. A lot of stores have mobile apps. They will often have exclusives ads or coupons that aren't online or by e-mail too," she said.

Hillier says she does her shopping closer to the start of the school year when the deals are better.

After her shopping spree, Hillier purchased 163 items for $87.83.

This week, 8 News NOW will show how other shoppers fare. See who can buy the most back-to-school items on an $88 budget.
