Anthony Bennett Excited About New NBA Career

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Former UNLV Runnin' Rebel Anthony Bennett has provided fans with some terrific moments, even if it was for only one season.

One moment, however, stands out for Bennett and his fans – the day he was selected first overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"The only thing going through my head was trying not to fall on stage and off of those steps," he said. "After I got past that, it was just like, I'm really here."

He'll never forget June 27, 2013. Bennett is back in Las Vegas this week to share the excitement and his memory of that day.

"I remember everything. It's a great feeling… I remember everything man," he said.

Bennett hasn't changed much since he was drafted. He seems grounded. The newly crowned Cavalier hasn't spent a dime of his new NBA money.

"I'm just waiting for all this to settle down. I haven't got my first paycheck, so I'm not trying to wild out," he said.

Unfortunately for fans, he won't be able to play in the NBA Summer League games taking place in Las Vegas this week. He's still nursing a shoulder injury. While he can't play, his local impact will be felt for years.

"For us in our second season, to not just have someone who's going to play in the NBA, but be the number one pick in the draft, it's just very good for recruiting," said UNLV Head Coach Dave Rice. "We talk about that on the trip."

"I still see the young Anthony Bennett when I see him," added Bennett's prep coach Todd Simon. "But, I see all the hard work and everything he's done. I couldn't be more proud."

Who knows where Bennett's career will take him? He's off to a good start, especially since his friends had to talk him into furthering his basketball career.

"I would never (have) thought I'd be going number one in the draft, but it shows that hard work really pays off," he said.

It certainly has for the number one pick in the draft.
