8 on Your Side: Customer Encounters Groupon Resistance

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - John Mackin loves Groupon and frequently uses it.

"You save money," he said. "At least once a week, sometimes twice, if not more," he said.

When he stumbled upon a Groupon for new brakes from Just Brakes for less than $100, he had to have it.

"I couldn't pass that by," he said.

In hindsight, he says he wishes he had. He says his experience was anything but a deal, as he encountered resistance from one of the company's employees.

"He was very rude, very condescending and very unprofessional," Mackin said.

Customer service wasn't the only reason Mackin was dissatisfied. He claims the Just Brakes employee refused to honor the Groupon.

"He put my car in the computer and said my car did not qualify for any discounted brake jobs," Mackin said.

The Groupon said nothing about qualifying for the deal. That's when Mackin said things took an unexpected turn.

"He started yelling and screaming, telling me I am trying to pull a scam on him," he said.

Mackin left the store and contacted 8 on Your Side. 8 on Your Side contacted Just Brakes to find out why they refused to honor his Groupon. The company's chief operating officer said in a statement the company has taken steps to resolve the issue regarding the discount coupon, as well as reviewing their procedures and re-educating team members.

The local district manager also contacted Mackin and told him they would honor the Groupon. Mackin, however, didn't feel comfortable going back.

"I got a bad taste in my mouth with Just Brakes altogether," he said.

He praises Groupon, however, because the company refunded his money - no questions asked.

"Groupon stands by their products. I can't deny them that," he said.
