Family Talks About Ranch Burned in Carpenter 1 Fire

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT CHARLESTON, Nev. -- The structures burned by the Carpenter 1 Fire Tuesday night were part of the Prospect Ranch, which had several structures and was shared by a dozen families.

Barry Becker said it was like nothing he had ever seen. What was once a place for families to spend a weekend is now up in smoke. He took pictures of the damage. What used to be a 40-acre compound, with a beautiful lodge facing a pond, is now a pile of rubble and a distant fond memory for Becker and his family.

"You're going to tell them how you caught all those fish in the net and then we ate one?" Becker asks his granddaughter as they reminisce the good times at their ranch.

There are a dozen families who share ownership of the Prospect Springs Ranch. It was a place they spent summers and holidays and used for reunions. There were even little league and junior cheerleading parties.

"This is what the lodge looks like now, it's gone," Becker said.

The fire which started on the Pahrump side of the mountain blew miles towards the ranch. Firefighters reportedly stayed there for three days trying to prevent the flames from getting too close. One of the property owners tried cutting a fuel break, but came up short when the blaze tore through Tuesday night.

"It took about 25 to 30 minutes and it just went from one side of the property to the other," Becker said.

As they surveyed the damage the next day, five of the 16 buildings were destroyed, including the lodge that the owners built. No one was hurt and all the animals were safe.

Now it's time to start with what's left and rebuild, Becker said. He is hoping to get the rebuilding started right away.

Fire crews are still not letting people up the mountain without an escort.
