LAS VEGAS -- Major advances were made against the Carpenter 1 Fire in the past 24 hours and the wildfire is now 45 percent contained, Incident Management Team officials announced.

Over the past 12 days the fire has charred nearly 44 square miles and burned six structures at a remote ranch on Mount Charleston. As of Thursday morning, the fire was only 15 percent contained.

The rainy weather gave firefighters an opportunity to gain ground Thursday evening against the blaze and there is a 50 percent chance of rain Friday. Crews have been working to protect around 400 homes on the mountain. The fire is contained in the Rainbow subdivision area. There are 1,386 people and 75 engines being used to fight the wildfire.

While the rain has brought relief to the fire crews, there is some danger of flooding on the mountain due to loss of vegetation.

U.S. Senator Dean Heller is expected to tour the Carpenter 1 Fire Friday morning.

There will be a community meeting Friday at 5:30 p.m. in Pahrump at 2100 E. Walt Williams Drive, the commissioner's chamber at Calvada Eye.

The cost of fighting the blaze has reached nearly $12 million.
