MOUNT CHARLESTON, Nev. -- The Carpenter 1 Fire near Las Vegas has grown to nearly 28,000 acres or 44 square miles, according to the Incident Management Team.

No new structures have been burned and the wildfire is 43 percent contained, compared to 10 percent on Wednesday. Firefighters said the next few days will be critical.

The fire did expand into remote areas of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area causing the scenic loop and trials to be briefly closed to the public Thursday morning. The fire is burning in a an area difficult to reach. Officials said this fire may have to burn itself out.

"They had to let it burn because the fire intensity was too high. You couldn't put people in it safely. Today, they'll see what's going on with the fire and definitely put air resources on it," said Suzanne Shelp with the Incident Management Team.

There are 1,386 fire personnel fighting the wildfire which started on July 1. On Tuesday, the fire, fueled by strong winds, crossed State Route 157, or Kyle Canyon Road. That part of the fire was contained. Fire officials also said the fire is now moving away from homes in the Rainbow subdivision. Blackened earth can be seen right next to homes where firefighters burned brush to take fuel away from the approaching wildfire.

Around 500 residents were evacuated from the Mount Charleston area on July 4. Metro Police are finalizing plans to allow residents back into their homes for brief periods of time.

Fire Commanders said CenturyLink phone service has been knocked out. The fire destroyed some 6,000 feet of phone lines and there is no timetable as to when it will be repaired.

There will be a public meeting Friday at 5:30 pm in Pahrump, an exact location has yet to be announced.
