Wildfire Threatens East Side of Mt. Charleston

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Residents are being evacuated from Kyle Canyon because of the Carpenter One wildfire on Mount Charleston.

Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Loy Hixson said the fire spread to the eastside of Lee Canyon Road around 3:30 p.m. State routes 156 and 157 -- Lee and Kyle canyon roads -- are closed to traffic.

The roads have been closed so that Metro Police officers can help evacuate homes near the wildfire and firefighters can assist, Hixson said.

"One of the challenges we're facing is that there is one road in and one road out and that's obviously going to get congested," Metro officer Bill Cassell said.

Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort closed as a precaution Thursday evening. The resort will be closed until further notice.

The Red Cross of Southern Nevada has opened an emergency shelter for evacuees at James Bilbray Elementary School, 9370 Brent Lane, Las Vegas.

Clark County officials posted an alert for unhealthy air quality conditions in some parts of Clark County because of the wildfire burning on Mount Charleston, other regional fires and fireworks in the Las Vegas valley.
