Mandatory Evacuations Ordered Near Mt. Charleston Fire

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- People living in Trout Canyon near the Carpenter One fire on Mt. Charleston are being ordered to evacuate their homes, the Bureau of Land Management said.

A Hot Shot crew is now fighting the fire with the help of a helicopter dropping fire retardant, five engines and a law enforcement officer. There are more than 300 fire crews battling the blaze.

Initially the evacuation order was voluntary, but became mandatory Thursday.

The fire started Monday when lightning hit a tree. It has now grown to 2,000 acres and, as of noon Thursday, is zero percent contained. It is burning on the Pahrump side of the mountain.

The Red Cross is setting up an evacuation center at Hafen Elementary School, 7120 Hafen Ranch Road, Pahrump. The shelter will be open overnight and pets are welcome.
