I-Team: Man Innocent of Murder Held on Parole Violation

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- There has been another setback for a man working to get out of prison. Parole was denied for Fred Steese who has already spent 20 years behind bars for a murder he didn't commit.

As the I-Team reported in March,  after two decades in prison, a judge cleared Steese of the 1992 murder of Circus Circus performer Gerald Soulos. But just when he was set to be released, the state of Florida snatched him up for failing to report for parole on an unrelated robbery conviction from 1989.

At a parole hearing Thursday, commissioners in Florida denied his appeal to get out of prison. Now he is scheduled to be released in 2016. Steese's attorney points out the parole violation would have been resolved a long time ago if his client hadn't spent two decades behind bars on a wrongful conviction.
