High Winds Force Rangers to Call Off Search for Missing Man

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Lake Mead park rangers have called off the search for a 35-year-old Chicago man who was last seen in the Boulder Basin at Lake Mead Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Park Service, high winds on the lake are making it too difficult to search.

Witnesses told rangers that the man, who was not wearing a lifejacket, jumped into the water to swim and began to struggle. An emergency call was put out around 4:30 p.m. Ten people from the park service and Las Vegas Boat Harbor immediately began a search, but it was called off at 6:30 p.m., when the winds started gusting and creating three to four-foot waves.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of the missing man," park spokeswoman Christie Vanover said. "We will continue to do all we can to locate him."
