LAS VEGAS -- It's been a tough start to the week for 91 people who lost their homes over the weekend when a fire raced through an apartment complex on Father's Day.

The Red Cross is helping the displaced residents get back on their feet and an investigation is  underway to determine what caused the fire.

The fire started on the second floor of the apartment building forcing numerous families out of their homes. The victims say they need all the help they can get. Father's Day didn't turn out quite like some expected.

"My son was supposed to be out here with my granddaughter and I'm glad they didn't make it this weekend," said Maurice, who wouldn't divulge his last name.

The fire started Sunday morning. Maurice says he and a friend were trapped inside a second-story apartment and forced to jump from a window, leaving everything else behind.

"This is all I have. I don't even have shoes," he said.

"We just really don't know what the cause of the fire is yet," said Tim Symanski with Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

An investigation is underway to find out how the cause of the blaze. In all, 24 units in the Escantada apartment complex were damaged.

"The focus for us is not how it happened, but getting everybody relocated," said Bret Holmes, the president of Advanced Management Group which owns the apartment complex.

There was some talk among residents that the fire was intentionally set and was the result of a fight that occurred in one of the units.

"We heard the rumors, but I don't have any details on that. It would be more speculation and more rumors. I don't want to add fuel to the fire," Holmes said.

Residents are left to pick up the pieces and try to get their lives in order.

"I am thankful my kids weren't there, but more thankful that I'm going to have another Father's Day next year," Maurice said.
