Acts of Kindness: Joyce Eatman

LAS VEGAS - Claudine Robinson deserves a little pampering.

"2013 was really a rough year for me," she said. "I was undergoing third-stage breast cancer. I had to work through that, as well as I had the children."

She's not talking about her own kids. Nine-year-old Ezekial and his sister are Claudine's great grandchildren. She's the one raising them.

"It's hard to survive when there are two working parents in a home, let alone no working parents," she said.

Food stamps help with some of the necessities, but they don't cover other needs. That's where Joyce Eatman comes in.

Eatman has been a fixture in the Las Vegas community for the past two decades. Her nonprofit Ladies Advocating Christian Entertainment, or LACE, has helped provide emergency food to the less fortunate for 20 years.

Approximately five years ago, Eatman recognized a growing need. "As we were helping the less fortunate families, these seniors started to come," she said.

As donations stopped because of the slump in the economy, the need for assistance grew. "The more we started to help one family, another would come, another call," Eatman said.

According to the United States Census, more than 2.4 million grandparents are responsible for the well-being of their grandchildren. That represents a 20 percent increase from the prior decade.

Eatman created Grants for Grands. It's become her mission to assist one grand-family every week with basic necessities and a special gift or two - even when she can't always provide for herself.

"It has been such an encouragement to me to know that someone cares enough to just help us along the way," Robinson said.

8 News NOW decided it was time to reward Eatman for her efforts – awarding her $800 as part of its weekly series Acts of Kindness.
