(Aug. 31) -- The wife of Democratic vice president candidate John Edwards is stumping in Nevada today. Elizabeth Edwards spent the morning in Reno and will meet with military families in Las Vegas this afternoon.
The private meeting will take place at a local pizza parlor around 1:30 this afternoon. The event is not open to the public. It was originally scheduled to be held at the private home of Kimberly Irenze, whose husband was recently deployed to Iraq. But to accommodate more people, the venue was changed at the last minute to the restaurant.
Edwards spent the morning in northern Nevada where she held a town hall meeting at the University of Nevada Reno. That event was open to the public and the topic was education.
Edwards grew up on military bases and has said she believes members of the armed forces need more government support.
She is also promoting John Kerry's plans to increase the armed forces by 40,000 troops -- so that soldiers don't need to be recalled to serve in Iraq after a previous deployment.
That's a message that's certainly expected to be well received by the military families meeting with her this afternoon -- all of whom know what it's like to have a loved one deployed overseas.
Edwards' visit today is just one more indication that Nevada remains a battleground state in the race for the White House.
