LAS VEGAS -- When Randy Kleiner stopped to help an injured driver, he didn't expect to become injured himself.

But on Thursday morning, as he was assisting someone who had crashed their car, another car drove by and hit him. Kleiner was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition.

Kleiner and his wife were preparing to celebrate two major milestones in their lives, but the day after he was hit, his wife, Colleen, was by his side waiting for him to pull through.

The couple were planning Randy's 50th birthday party in June and their upcoming 27th wedding anniversary.

"If I could trade places with him, I would," Colleen said.

Even this injury won't stop Randy from being a good Samaritan, his wife said.

"He'll help anybody," Colleen said. "If he sees anybody in need -- it's just the way he is, he'd do it again if he had to."

Early Thursday morning, just after 4 a.m., Randy stopped to help an injured driver who had hit a median near U.S. 95 North and Valley View Boulevard.

"From what the cops told me, he went 30 feet," Colleen said.

Colleen said her husband was leaning over helping the injured driver when another car hit her car and Randy and then took off.

"How you can hit somebody and leave them there is the part that had me up all night last night," she said.

Colleen said her husband's injuries are severe and recovery will take a long time – but she's counting the days until they walk out of the hospital.

"I'm just going to wait on him hand and foot and be glad he's here," she said.

Police identified the driver who hit Kleiner as Robert Owen Blount, 23. He was arrested on charges of failure to report an accident, having an open container in a vehicle, failure to render aid at an accident, improper lane change and driving under the influence.

His tires blew out right after the hit-and-run and an eyewitness chased him and called police.
