8 on Your Side: Man Overcharged at DMV

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Ryan Gabriel's prized possession is his 2013 Toyota Tacoma. To say he loves it is an understatement.

"I just really like the truck. I've always wanted that truck since I was in high school," he said. "I just love this truck."

He bought it earlier this year when he lived in Minnesota, where winters are harsh.

"I had my Corolla when I went out there, and the Corolla was not doing so good with all the snow out there," he said.

The Las Vegas weather and sunshine called him home. When he went to register his truck in Nevada, however, he received an unpleasant surprise.

"I saw her write down twenty nine hundred dollars," Gabriel said. "I thought that was just for her records or whatever, but then she's like, ‘Alright, you owe me this much.'"

The Department of Motor Vehicles worker claimed Gabriel never paid taxes on the car when he bought it. After he got home, he realized he had been overcharged, because he had paid taxes on the car.

"Then I went back the next day, and I'm like, ‘Right here, I paid it.' They were like, ‘Well, we have to investigate it,'" he said.

Gabriel says he never heard from the DMV.

"I just wanted to get my money back. I was going to do anything to get my money back. That's when we called Channel 8 on Your Side," he said.

8 on Your Side called the DMV and got a case opened for Gabriel. In approximately a week, Gabriel received a check for the full amount.

"I want to thank you guys for making this such a quick process," he said.

Despite his ordeal, he says he holds no grudge regarding the error. "Everybody makes mistakes," he said.
