DA Charges Man in Teen's Murder Case, Bail Set at More than $1M

LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County District Attorney formally charged a 20-year-old Las Vegas man with several counts in connection with the murder of a teenager.

The DA's office announced Thursday the charges against Demetrius Black, which include murder with a deadly weapon, attempted murder with a deadly weapon, battery, and discharging a firearm at or into a structure.

In all, Black is now facing 16 counts.

According to Metro Police, Black shot and killed 17-year-old Betty "Jay" Pinkney in January 2012, during a house party.

Black and his friends were kicked out of the party, but returned and started shooting randomly into the house, police said.

A 32-year-old woman was also hurt in the shooting.

The charges came on the same day that North Las Vegas Justice Court Chief Judge Chris Lee set bail at more than $1.1 million for Black.

The bail was set during his first court appearance Thursday.

Detectives have been trying to solve Pinkney's murder for more than year. A break in the case came when Black was arrested for an unrelated robbery, and officers found the gun they say was used in the shooting.

His next court date is set for May 23.
