LAS VEGAS -- A 17-year-old is being mourned by his friends, family and teachers after being killed in a car crash early Sunday morning.

Friends identified the victim as Jahlonn Williams. The 13-year-old girl with him survived, but is in critical condition. North Las Vegas Police say they were hit by 18-year-old Douglas Bruce.

Williams died at the scene. The girl was ejected from the sedan and is in critical condition.

Police say she wasn't wearing a seatbelt. Police believe Williams and the girl were related. As classmates placed candles and flowers at the intersection, a parent told 8 News NOW he's having a hard time explaining to his own son what happened.

"He's going to be missed. He's the type kid, as an adult when you see him, you know you're proud to see kids like him around," said Earl Parker.

Hundreds were out on Sunday at Mojave High School for a vigil including the school's principal, teachers and students. Jahlonn's basketball coach described the teen as lovable.

"He was just a great guy. He just got along with everybody. He was very popular in our organization on our campus as a whole and there was no way you could find anybody to say anything bad about him," said Colin Darfour.

Police say Bruce, who suffered minor injuries, ran the stop sign. He's being held on traffic charges but faces felony charges because police think alcohol and speed were factors.

This is the sixth fatal crash in North Las Vegas this year.
