LAS VEGAS -- Dozens of volunteers came out Thursday to help Arturo Martinez move on to the next chapter in his life.

Arturo Martinez lost his wife and daughter in a brutal attack last year, and was himself almost beaten to death.

With new floors, new carpet and new lighting, his house in downtown Las Vegas is almost ready to be rented out.

The house carries with it a sad story, one the owner hopes can eventually be left behind as another family moves in and turns the house into a home again.

Getting a house ready to rent out takes a lot of work.

"Everybody's working their behinds off," a volunteer said.

The volunteers from Keller Williams Realty said their sweat is nothing compared to the tears the man who owns this home has gone through over the past year.

"This will help him move on with his new memories and get past what happened," said Leah (last name not given) of Keller Williams Realty.

On April 15, 2012, the house turned into a crime scene when, police say, Bryan Clay broke in, assaulted and killed Martinez's wife and daughter. Martinez was beaten and left for dead.

"All this wall was bloodshed," Martinez said. "This wall, that wall. I was there right here, face down."

Martinez said he has to leave the broken pieces of his life behind.

Special Report: Arturo Martinez: One Year Later

He's putting the house up for rent, but will remember the good times, such as when he cemented his children's names in the front yard many years ago.

"The house is just a house," Martinez said. "What I take with me is the good memories."

As Martinez shook hands and thanked the volunteers, these men and women say they couldn't find a more deserving family to give their time and energy.

"It's a positive experience to be able to give back to such a positive person," Leah said.

Martinez, who is now a widowed dad to two young sons, says staying positive is all he can do to move on.

The project is part of Keller Williams Realty's RED Day event, where tens of thousands of agents volunteer around the country every year.
