LAS VEGAS -- Friends of a mother who, police say, stabbed and killed her children are left wondering how it could have happened.

On Friday afternoon, 40-year-old Hae Chong Serra killed 11-year-old Hope and 9-year-old Cory, before turning the knife on herself, Metro Police said.

A memorial has grown outside the home as adults and children continue to leave notes and stuffed animals. By all appearances, friends say the family seemed happy.

"She was a good person and I don't know, I want to keep saying that because she was a good person," family friend Jackie Hoadley said.

She has known Hae Chong Serra since they were little girls. She found out what happened when Serra's husband, Christopher, called her from a mental health facility where he said he had checked himself into last week after trying to hurt himself.

Hoadley said she saw no signs something was wrong when she saw the couple just a few weeks earlier.

"It was at my birthday, she came in with her husband, her and Chris and it was fine. She hung out for a little bit then she left," Hoadley said.

"Some people, if they genuinely want to hurt themselves or others, they will just do it and there are no warning signs of it," said Jennifer Riedel, the program director for behavior Health at Southern Hills Hospital.

Riedel said she's seen similar cases where people with no violent tendencies just snap. She doesn't know the Serra family, but said some people don't seek help.

"Sometimes that's a cultural thing. Sometimes that's just who we are as private people. We don't want to air our dirty laundry."

Some neighbors speculate financial problems may be behind the killings. HaHae Chong Serra quit her job at family district court a few years ago. According to neighbors, their home is underwater.
