8 on Your Side: Man Scammed with Fake Jackets

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - A scam that has targeted fashion-conscious people around the world is now targeting Las Vegas residents. A local man who thought he bought an Armani jacket discovered it was a fake.

"I was having my car washed, and while waiting for it, there's this black SUV that pulled up and said, ‘I need help. Can you help me?' said Las Vegas resident Sal Estrada.

That's how the Armani scam began – at a car wash.

"He spoke in a very heavy Italian accent," Estrada said.

The man with the accent claimed to be looking for directions to the airport. Estrada gave him directions. In return, the scammer made Estrada an offer he couldn't refuse.

"He goes to the back of his car and pulls out this plastic container that has a jacket," Estrada said.

The scammer claimed the jackets were made of leather and suede, and he had to get rid of them before going through Customs. Estrada says the man told him he could have three for $100.

"'It is our collection for the upcoming fall, and you will be one of the first to have it,'" Estrada recalls the man said.

Estrada was hooked and consequently scammed, because the jackets aren't authentic. The logo is wrong, and the jackets aren't made with leather. They are made with vinyl.

Tailor George Siamitaras immediately spotted the discrepancies. "Just look at it, not even have to touch it. I can tell through the bag it is not Armani," he said.

Siamitaras, who's been tailoring for more than 50 years, says the counterfeiting is very good and could easily fool someone who doesn't know better.

Estrada didn't think he would fall for something like this, but he did. Now, he's doing his part to warn others, because he's not alone.

"What I read on the Internet is that other people have paid seven hundred, five hundred, and they follow the same script," he said.
