LAS VEGAS -- An East Career Technical Academy senior is dead after he hanged himself at school. His body was discovered on Thursday.

Family, friends and fellow students are mourning the death of 18-year-old Orlando Cano.

Friends say Cano always appeared happy and positive. He was an active swimmer who helped motivate teammates for the for the Las Vegas High School swim team. Friends said, they don't know what could have prompted Cano to take his own life.

After Cano's body was discovered, the district immediately sent crisis response workers to the school.

"We talk about it, we go through the grief process. That's where students have the chance to grieve with staff or fellow students," said Debbie Mansoor, a crisis response worker for the district. "We focus on how the student lived, not how the student died. Because it's really important for the kids to remember the good times, what's good about that person."

Counselors are also available inside the schools.

"What they try to do is problem solve," said Rosemary Virtuoso, a coordinator for crisis response. "Help the person become more of an advocate for themselves, whatever the crux of the problem is, help the child get through the issue."

School counselors use a binder with information on signs of suicide to try and reach vulnerable students.

"Each one of those students who ask to see someone that day are seen by a trained clinician, a psychologist, or school nurse," Virtuoso said.

School counselors and crisis leaders say their job is to ultimately give students the tools they need to get through the pain of losing a friend. Cano's friends on the swim team are working to move forward, but refuse to forget their friend. They've created a memorial at the pool and team members wore his name at their meet over the weekend.
