Students Learn About Life as First Responders

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Hundreds of local students got some specialized job training as first responders Thursday.

Every year students from Veterans Tribute Career and Technical Academy get together with community agencies to get some hands-on experience in dealing with emergencies. In a disastrous situation, police officers, emergency medical technicians and even the Red Cross work quickly to prevent fatalities. In Thursday's scenario, no one's life is in danger, but students are required to act as if the situation is real.

Students are paired with professionals from Metro, Nevada Highway Patrol, local ambulance companies and other agencies.

"So we take them out of the classroom setting and we put them into these real-life settings," said Ted Milano, the health and safety coordinator.

The students experience handling everything from a dispatch call to dealing with a crime scene. Students get to select the training that interests them.

"It gives them a better working idea," Metro officer Tom Moyer said. "When they go through their academy training, they have been exposed."

Alexandria Roberts is learning about investigating a crime scene.

"So, right now, we just got called out to a 4-19 which is a dead body," she said.

School administrators say the training exercises are as accurate as possible and could help students get on the path to a good paying career.

"With the partners coming on board and showing their support for the students, we are hoping to be their resource as the first stop for hiring," school principal Tammy Boffelli said.

Veterans Tribute is the only school in the state with a program that prepares students to become first responders.
