Driving You Crazy: Access Road Speed Limit

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Viewers want to know why the speed limit for access roads near I-15 and 215 is 45 miles per hour when most drivers travel at freeway speeds of 65 miles per hour.

Nevada Department of Transportation officials say they will study the speed on those access roads. This study was delayed, but will now happen since a formal request for a speed study has been requested.

Speeds limits are set by the type of road, speed of traffic, unique road characteristics and sight distance.

The access road - a one-way road or really long ramp - runs alongside I-15. It's meant to shift exiting ramp traffic off the freeway. The speed limit is 45, but it's a race course.

NDOT will conduct the study, determine 85 percent of the average speed, crunch the numbers and make adjustments to find the appropriate speed limit.

NDOT officials say they will also review signage to ensure there is enough to adequately inform motorists of the 45 mph speed limit.
