Clark County Suicides Far Outnumber Homicides

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- There were more than twice as many suicides as homicides in Clark County over the past 10 years.

Clark County Coroner data from 2003 through 2012 -- with 2012 figures preliminary -- show there were 3,555 suicides compared to 1,605 homicides. There were also far more suicides by firearm, 1,813, than homicides by firearm, 1,028.

Including 19 accidental shootings, there were 2,860 individuals who died from firearm-related incidents in the county over the 10-year-period, roughly equivalent to the enrollment of a large high school. Of those incidents, 63.4 percent were suicides, 35.9 percent were homicides and seven-tenths of 1 percent were accidents.

But firearms were involved in 64 percent of the homicides compared to 51 percent of the suicides.

From 2010 through 2012 the percentage of suicides involving firearms was lower in Clark County than elsewhere in the state. Of the 1,178 suicides in the county during those years, 568 or 48.2 percent involved firearms. Of the 1,530 suicides statewide, 815 or 53.3 percent involved firearms, according to the Nevada State Health Division.

Slightly more than one of every 10 suicides in Clark County over the past 10 years involved a victim who resided outside Nevada.

Coroner data shows that 370 or 10.4 percent of the 3,555 suicides in the county during that period involved out-of-state residents.

With the exception of 2008, when 50 of the victims were from out of state, the number of non-Nevadans who committed suicide in the county ranged from 30 to 40 a year.
