Campaign to Save Lives of Domestic Violence Victims Launches

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Domestic violence advocates said at least ten women and children have been killed in domestic violence cases since the beginning of this year in Nevada.

One of the most recent domestic violence cases was Renee Bassett, who police said was shot and killed by her ex- husband inside her Henderson home. The couple's son was in another room during the incident.

An organization dedicated to helping others now needs its own help. Safe Faith United is launching a new and ambitious fundraising campaign. It's called "1 Million Dollars to Save 1 Million Victims."

"We desperately need $1 million dollars to save one million victims," Ferreira said. "One dollar for each victim has an impact," said Rebeca Ferriera, the woman in charge of Safe Faith United. "When you take the one dollar and times it by a million, it makes a huge difference."

The money will go to the never-ending battle against domestic violence. Ferreira said more than a thousand victims have come through her door since starting the non-profit organization four years ago.  Safe Faith United has helped the victims of some of the highest profile cases Las Vegas has seen recently.

Last April, machete attack victim Maria Gomez had her hands cut off by her ex boyfriend. Gomez survived the attack only to die months later of uterine cancer. Jade Morris' family received help after her body was stabbed more than 40 times and left in the north part of the valley.

Safe Faith United has also helped other victims like Francisca Torres.

"If Safe Faith United didn't help me, I wouldn't live anymore," Torres said.

Torres came to Safe Faith United after her ex-husband threw her off the second floor of her home and shattered her jaw. She is now a volunteer with the organization and it was her idea to come up with the campaign to raise $1 million dollars to help save one million victims.

Safe Faith hopes to raise the money through donations and hold their own events to reach the goal of one million dollars.

The organization also have a thrift shop called "survivor" that is just about to open with the goal creating programs for abusers to stop the cycle before it begins.
