8 on Your Side: Car Wash Warning

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - In Las Vegas, the sun is hot, the roads are dusty and cars get dirty. That's why people like Daniel Lane, who take great pride in their rides, get their vehicles washed regularly.

Lane routinely took his truck to Showtime Car Wash. "They've been doing a good job, so I was a repeat customer," he said.

Rather than watch the wash, he would get a haircut and come back to find his truck spotless and in mint condition. One day, things changed.

"All the guys that work there standing in the middle of a huddle, looking at me with puppy dog eyes say, ‘Oh, we thought you took your truck.' Ah no, I'm right here," he said.

His truck had been stolen. He called police and recovered the vehicle within an hour, but not without some damage.

"Originally, it looked worse," Lane said.

Rather than a detail, his truck received dents and dings. "It doesn't look that bad, but when I got an estimate, it was over five thousand dollars worth of damage," Lane said.

He thought the car wash would have to pay for the damage, but it didn't. The Nevada Insurance Commissioner's Office says car washes are not required to carry liability insurance - although it is a good business practice.

In other words, the car wash doesn't have to pay for the damage to Lane's truck. Since he didn't have full coverage on it, his insurance company wouldn't pay for the repairs either.

"If I knew it was going to cost me, I would have washed the truck myself," he said.

Showtime Car Wash did attempt to make some repairs to the truck at no cost. The company also offered Lane free car washes. None of that, however, will pay for the major repairs. If Lane wants compensation, his only option is to file a lawsuit.

His experience serves as a lesson for others. Make sure your car wash has liability insurance, and never leave your car unattended while at the car wash.
